四十年代，“喜记”是本地家喻户晓的传统潮州饼店，尤其是它们制作的中秋饼更是闻名遐迩。“喜记”的老板连学庚育有独子连文鼎，在制饼方面有着极高的天分。文鼎与卖唱女林小梅情投意合，让父亲得知，千方百计阻止两人来往，还安排了他和富商的女儿孙秀兰成亲。碍于父亲的威严和传统的束缚，文鼎无奈接受安排，而实际上秀兰确实是个好妻子、好媳妇，使得文鼎认为父亲当初的选择是正确的。 　　中秋节的这一夜，文鼎不小心跌入水井，昏迷了过去。醒来时，文鼎赫然发现已穿越时空，来到了现代的新加坡。文鼎机缘巧合地遇上正为找工人而头疼的连大喜。大喜见文鼎年纪轻轻，竟然懂得做传统糕饼，大为惊喜，立即聘请了他。通过大喜，文鼎也认识了他的弟弟连双喜，并发现两人竟是他后人，经营的正是他家传下来的“喜记”。连家两兄弟性格各异，在家庭、事业和感情各方面上都颇为不顺利。 　　大喜是个多愁善感，情感脆弱的男人，可是却有强烈的责任感，为守家业不遗余力，只可惜心有余而力不足。大喜曾被爱情伤害过无数次，从此便害怕再恋爱，所以就算是暗恋隔壁的店员欧阳璇也不敢表白。 　　二喜表面像是个大男人，其实是个典型的“妻管严”，对妻子杜诗妮是言听计从。爱面子的二喜，做生意眼高手低，时常是“讲就天下无敌，做就无能為力”，因此也给“喜记”带来了不少麻烦。 　　在文鼎看来，两兄弟问题的根源就是他们都缺少了男子气概，丢尽了他这个祖先的颜面。文鼎于是决定帮两兄弟重新抬头，做个真正的男子汉。 　　于此同时，传统的没落，导致“喜记”的生意每况愈下，面对着关门的厄运。文鼎积极挽救，可是除了要面对时代的大趋势，他还遇到了一个更强的劲敌：一个和小梅长得一模一样，性格却天渊之别的女强人佘美仁。美仁为了开西式糕饼店，打算收购“喜记”，因此跟文鼎对上。岂料这一中一西的死对头在斗智斗法的过程中，竟然对彼此产生了好感，但是嘴硬的两人都不愿承认。 　　一番经历之后，文鼎渐渐有了领悟，终决定撇弃旧有的古板思想，并从西式糕饼得到灵感，再融合自己传统手艺，创造出新的产品，使“喜记”生意有了起色。同时，他也放下了大男人的包袱，与美仁的恋情有了眉目。可是就在事业和爱情两得意的时候，文鼎却偏偏发现了回返自己时代的方法。到底文鼎是要选择留在现代，和所爱的女人在一起，还是回到从前，使历史维持不变，让连家两兄弟能继续存活在现代的世界呢……
